futile

you say i didn’t try–
but you just closed your eyes
every time i showed you scars
forming from your paper cuts

you say i didn’t try–
while you deftly knotted ties
with the hands that once held me
you grant your final gift of love

you say i didn’t try, but i did–
it takes more trying to say silent
in the face of brutal ignorance

it takes more trying to sew a smile
on my face, to gauze the blood
that ran underneath my soul,
every time you rendered me
unworthy and invisible

you say i didn’t try,
but i tried to break loose—
your own hands tied this noose.

the wind breaks the branch
in my death i am now free,
the apples roll slowly under
but never far from the tree.
